Man fires into Inkster police station, kills self when arrest is imminent

A strange and violent series of events began late Friday night as a man unleashed two shots into an Inkster police station and ended Saturday morning in Garden City when the gunman used a third round to kill himself.

Inkster officers working late in a station at 27301 South River had their routines interrupted at about 11:50 p.m. last night when a group of frightened individuals, including children, entered the lobby.

Moments later a man in a vehicle fired two shots into the building. At least one penetrated the lobby doors and buried itself in a wall, narrowly missing the visitors.

As it turned out, the victims had accused the shooter of larceny, enraging him.

After determining that no one had been hit, the police put out an APB on the shooter and his vehicle. Soon, police throughout the Detroit metro area were looking for him.

Early Saturday morning, a Garden City cruiser saw a vehicle matching that described in the All Points Bulletin and tried to pull it over.

The vehicle drifted to a stop, and the officers found that the suspect had killed himself with his own weapon.

The shooting and suicide are still being investigated. The dead man’s name has not been released.
