A man was rescued after falling down a shaft on the USS Midway Museum Thursday morning reported the Union Tribune San Diego on December 19, 2013.

Emergency personnel were called to the scene of the USS Midway Museum docked at San Diego’s Embarcadero on North Harbor Drive shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday after a man in his 70s fell down a flight through an open hatch, said San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Battalion Chief David Connor.

The man, a museum volunteer on the retired aircraft carrier, was working when he slipped and fell 15 feet from the second deck onto the third deck and was trapped in a hatchway.

Due to location where the man had fallen, firefighters could not easily reach him. An extensive extrication requiring hoists from a deck above where the man was confined was implemented. The entire extrication took 30 minutes.

The man was transported to a local area hospital with complaints of back pain. Further details of the extent of his injuries are unknown.
