Man faces charges for parrot stomping death

Saturday, October 1, marked a tragic day for one parrot owner in Boulder Creek, CA. Huey, estimated to be at least 18 years old, was stomped to death by 32 year old David Miles.  Miles was arrested on request of Huey’s owner.

It seems that Huey’s owner, as well as two others living in the home, were allowing Miles to stay with them.  Miles arrived while the bird’s owner was in the shower around 11:30 PM.  When he entered, the two dogs living at the home barked.  Huey then flew onto Miles’ shoulder and bit him on the neck.  Miles managed to flip Huey from his shoulder onto the floor.

Just when the situation appeared to be resolved, Miles took further action.  He stomped the parrot between 3 and four times.  Huey died as a result.  Huey’s owner had only had Huey for about a year, but she says the previous owner had him for 17 years.

Parrots live a long time.  They often outlive their owners, they certainly have the capability.  They also have different ways of displaying emotions.  Frightened birds may bite, or they may retreat.  A light nip, frequently misinterpreted at a bite, may be a sign of affection.  How bad the “bite” was is unclear.

Monday, shortly after midnight, deputies arrested Miles as he walked away from the home.  He claims Huey’s owner chased him with a knife then asked for his arrest.  It is unknown if Huey had ever bitten or attacked Miles, or anyone else for that matter.

Jail records show Miles having a history of drug contacts and had been arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of drugs earlier Saturday.  He now faces felony animal cruelty charges.
