When Rascal, his Yorkie, jumped off the pontoon boat into Brooker Creek Saturday afternoon, John Patti didn't hesitate. He jumped in after the dog, determined to save his four-legged friend. Patti was partially successful; he managed to get Rascal to safety, but then he went underwater. His friends on the boat attempted to rescue Patti but were unable to locate him. Patti's body was recovered this morning, according to an article posted on the WTSP website today.
Patti's friends told WTSP that Rascal was on a leash for his own safety but somehow managed to get out of the leash, and that's when he went overboard.
Although many people assume dogs can swim, that is far from true, and every year there are many tragedies as dogs, especially the smaller toy breeds, fall into swimming pools, and off docks and boats.
It's a good idea to have your dog fitted with a pet life jacket. They are relatively inexpensive and are available in many pet supply stores. It's a small investment to protect your four-legged friend.
