Man dies in California while trying to save dog

On the first day of 2013, a California man lost his life while attempting to rescue his dog from the ocean near Point Reyes Beach, Calif.

According to Fox News, shortly after noon, the 59-year-old man, his wife and their dog, were walking along the beach when a large wave hit them, sweeping the wife and dog into the rough water.

According to the report, a passerby helped the woman to get back to shore, but as the man attempted to rescue his dog from the pounding surf, he was swept out to sea.

After several hours of searching, his body was recovered by the Coast Guard.

The woman and dog, safe on shore, did not suffer physical harm.

Officials point to this sad event as a tragic reminder to never turn your back on the ocean.
