Gregory Vance Gushaw, 68, died after falling off the Star Of India's rigging.
Gushaw from Coronado, who voluntarily did an annual test on the Star of India was conducting a training exercise when he suddenly fell. He was about 30 feet up on the yard of a mast when he began to fall and hit his head on the shrouds of the ship on his way down and landed in the water, according to the AP.
Two crew members jumped into the water after Gushaw and were able to get him into a small boat and then to the dock.
Gushaw was wearing a safety harness, but at this time no one knows why it failed.
Gushaw was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.
"He (Gushaw) is also a Docent, one of our best Docents, he is also a member of one of our board of trustees, he is probably one of the nicest and good-natured guys you'd ever hope to meet," Ashley told Fox news.
