A suspect was in critical condition after he fell from a four-story apartment building while fleeing from officers early Friday morning in northwest Atlanta.

So far, police have not released the man’s name and it was also unclear why officers were chasing him – though they said it was related to a suspicious activity.

The incident happened shortly after 3:40 a.m. at 2115 Piedmont Road near I-85, according to Atlanta police.

“Officers initiated a traffic stop in the 2000 block of Piedmont Road to further investigate suspicious activity,” police spokesman Officer John Chafee said. He did not provide any details on that alleged suspicious activity.

“During the investigation the driver of the vehicle fled from officers,” Officer Chafee said. The suspect fled to the rooftop of the apartments at 2115 Piedmont Road.

“The subject continued to elude officers and while attempting to escape he fell from the rooftop,” Officer Chafee said.

He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital with critical injuries due to the fall, Officer Chafee said.
