A week after a 27-year-old man was found shot to death on the walkway outside of an apartment building in northwest Atlanta, police said they have arrested the man they believe killed him.

Mr. Erskine Gater, 54, was charged with murder, felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony on Friday, according to Atlanta police.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office identified his alleged victim as Mr. Antwain Clay, of Atlanta. But police have not released a motive for the murder, which happened on Dec. 20.

Around 10:45 p.m. that Friday, officers responded to 603 James P. Brawley Drive after getting a 911 call about a person shot, police spokesman Sgt. Greg Lyon said.

When officers arrived they found an unresponsive male on the walkway to the apartment building, police said.

“The unidentified male had been shot in the chest and died on scene,” Sgt. Lyon said. “Witnesses heard a verbal altercation and then heard a gunshot and then located the male in front of 603 James P. Brawley.”

Mr. Clay, who lived on Fairburn Road, was pronounced dead at the scene. It’s unclear why he was at the apartment complex.

Mr. Gater was transported to the Fulton County jail where he remained Saturday without bond.
