A city man was arrested by Manchester Police who allege that the man attacked his 78-year-old neighbor with a syringe filled with insulin following an apparent disagreement.
In a statement released this morning, Manchester Police said Richard Crawford, 48, of 150 River Road, apt 2C, has been charged with First Degree Assault, Criminal Threatening, Criminal Trespass and Obstructing the Report of a Crime.
Police said officers responded to a River Road address Friday afternoon for a report of an assault with a hypodermic needle. Upon arrival, officers spoke with a 78-year-old woman, who reported that at about 3:45 p.m. her neighbor, Richard Crawford, came to her door requesting to speak with her about another neighbor. When she asked him to leave, Crawford told her something was in her hair. He then reached behind her. The victim stated she heard two clicks and then felt a poke in the back of her neck. She then saw what she described as a small syringe containing a clear liquid.
The victim told the officers that Crawford said he had poisoned her and that she was going to die. The victim again ordered Crawford to leave and told him she was calling the police. Crawford then tried to take the phone from the victim’s hand. When Crawford finally left the victim’s apartment, after telling her he had not poisoned her, the victim called police.
Manchester Police detectives arrived and spoke with Crawford and other witnesses. They learned that Crawford does have access to hypodermic needles that are prefilled with insulin, and which make a clicking sound when used.
Officers noticed that the victim had a distinct puncture wound to the back of her neck. She was transported to a local hospital for observation and treatment. Doctors told detectives that, depending on the amount, insulin could be extremely harmful or potentially life threatening to a non-diabetic person.
Crawford was arrested and then held at the Hillsborough County House of Corrections on $50,000 cash or surety bail pending arraignment this morning at Manchester District Court.
The victim was released from the hospital following treatment.
