A Jackson man is being held on a $100,000 bond after being arraigned Tuesday with slashing the throat of his ex-girlfriend’s husband Monday night.

According to an affidavit of complaint, 41-year-old Stacey Mittlestat was arraigned Tuesday morning on a charge of attempted second degree murder after cutting the throat of 37-year-old Jason Whetstine during a fight inside Mittlestat’s trailer.

Mittlestat’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 26 in Jackson City Court.

The affidavit said around 6:20 p.m. Sunday, Whetstine and his wife Jennifer , both of Beech Bluff, went to Mittlestat’s trailer at Jackson Mobile Village, located at 2223 Hollywood Drive. The couple had come to pay Mittlestat some money they owed him.

While at Mittlestat’s, Mittlestat tried to hug Jason and Jason backed away, the affidavit said. Mittlestat then tried to hit Jason with a closed fist, but Mittlestat missed.

The affidavit said Jason had turned to leave when Mittlestat struck Jason in the back of the head. The two men fought and Jennifer broke the fight up. Jason then tried to leave again, but as before, was once again struck in the back of the head by Mittlestat. This led to another fight. It was during the second fight that Mittlestat pulled out a folding knife and slashed Jason’s throat.
Mittlestat left the scene in his SUV, the affidavit said.

According to a news release from the Jackson Police Department, around 7:35 p.m. Sunday, the department received a call about the stabbing at Jackson Mobile Village.

Police said a description of the SUV was put out on the police radio and a short time later, officers stopped Mittlestat's SUV on Hollywood Drive at Carolane Drive. Mittlestat was taken into custody and the knife used in the attack was found.

Jason, who was listed in serious condition, was transported by ambulance to Jackson- Madison County General Hospital. Jason is recovering and remains in the hospital in stable condition.

Investigators learned that Jason's wife had just ended a relationship with Mittlestat.
