James Mills, a 71 year old man charged with allegations of child molestation committed suicide on Friday March 15. Mills, of Gahanna, a suburb of Columbus, Ohio, was found dead in his backyard with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head after a friend went to Mills’ home to check on him. Mills did leave a note.
In September 2012, police showed up at Mills’ home with a search warrant after two teenaged runaway boys alerted police that they had sought refuge at Mills’ home. Mills was apparently known for sheltering runaway boys. Once inside Mills’ residence, the teens reported that they were forced to commit a sex act.
When police entered Mills home with a search warrant in September, they discovered that there were surveillance cameras “everywhere,” according to 10-TV. Some doors had barricades and extra locks. There was a combination lock on the door to Mills’ bedroom. After the intial police search and investigation, it was suspected that there may be other victims and investigators asked that anyone with information regarding other potential victims contact authorities.
Mills was charged with pandering sexually-oriented material involving a minor. He was also charged in federal court and was to appear in federal court on Friday, March 22, on charges of child pornography. NBC News reported that Mills' attorney stated that Mills was going to enter a guilty plea.
