The traditional two-car garage is often the largest room in a house, and an increasingly popular home improvement project is to repurpose all or part of this space for the man of the home’s entertainment and enjoyment. Cleverly called a “man cave,” depending on the homeowner’s interests these spaces are often equipped with a workbench, a pool table, a large-screen television and maybe even a Beertender!
Since the garage is typically attached to the rest of the house, it has easy access to water, electricity, heat and air conditioning. This can make it an economical choice for living area expansion. Additionally, many garages are large enough to house both some storage and some private-retreat space, but you may have to sacrifice a bit and spring for something more than just your run-of-the-mill garage cabinets if you want to make the space look cohesive.
It’s really not that difficult, though. You can simply sacrifice one of the bays of a two-car garage, cull down the items you need to store and then buy and place some attractive garage storage cabinets along only one wall in the remaining open space. The sacrificed car bay can then be used as the dedicated, masculine hang out. While you may also need to insulate the space for proper temperature control, if you open your mind (and, yes, your wallet), you may be surprised at how much enjoyment you can get out of the often neglected and under-utilized space in your garage.
This garage man cave video should give you some ideas to consider. In another, an avid fisherman transformed his garage into a fishing-themed lounge, complete with stuffed fish hanging on the wall, rods and reels prominently displayed on a slatwall and a conversation pit where his fishing buddies can visit and share "lies and other sea stories" about the big ones that got away.
Another man celebrated his rock-and-roll music collection, using his existing cabinets, garage shelving and other storage ideas to organize his vintage LPs. Along one entire wall he installed a powerful stereo system, including a turntable, an 8-track tape player, a cassette player and other devices so he could enjoy and show off all the music he'd accumulated in various formats over the years. He added some vivid paint on the walls, some comfy furniture and a few music-related posters to the walls for decoration and finished off his special “man cave” retreat with style.
