A 53-year-old man from Mashpee, Massachusetts, sporting a Captain America T-shirt and complimenting camouflage shorts was arrested on Cape Cod on the evening of July 15 after police found him inside the legendary Kennedy Compound home in Barnstable, Massachusetts. Ted Kennedy Jr. was the one who initially called Barnstable Police after he called the compound to speak with his teenage son, Ted Kennedy III. Instead, a stranger inside the home answered the phone at the compound, according to CNN. Kennedy then contacted police in Barnstable to visit the compound and perform a well-being check on his son.
When officers arrived on the scene around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, they saw a black Corvette parked outside the home. They then encountered the intruder – now identified as James Lacroix – in the kitchen along with Kennedy’s teenage son. The younger Kennedy was unharmed. When police asked Lacroix what he was doing inside the house, Lacroix calmly replied “Looking for Katy Perry." CBS in Boston reported Lacroix as saying that in addition to wishing to find the pop singing Perry, he also wanted to speak with President John F. Kennedy.
Lacroix informed the police that he had been hanging out inside the house with the teenage Kennedy for about three hours. Lacroix reportedly just sauntered into the home through an unlocked door. Kennedy’s Hyannis Port neighbors told police that they noticed Lacroix arriving at the compound around 6:30 p.m.
“Earlier in the evening, when the teen first got home, the intruder was already there. They had a conversation. The teen thought it was a family friend,” Barnstable Police Chief Paul McDonald told reporters Wednesday.
McDonald added that the Kennedys are used to a lot of foot traffic from family and friends coming in and out of the compound. He said that the younger Kennedy just assumed that Lacroix was, perhaps, "an associate of his father or other family member.”
USA Today reported that Lacroix is a disabled veteran. Police said that they’d recommend a psychiatric evaluation for the intruder. Lacroix was arrested, kept overnight by the Barnstable Police, and charged with breaking and entering. He was scheduled for arraignment at Barnstable District Court today.
