Man Booker Prize short list announced

The Booker Prize Foundation announced, on Tuesday, the short list for the Man Booker Prize, the most prestigious literary prize in the UK.

The list of six authors and books are:

* Peter Carey for Parrot and Olivier in America (Faber and Faber)
* Emma Donoghue for Room (Picador; Pan Macmillan)
* Damon Galgut for In a Strange Room (Atlantic Books; Grove Atlantic)
* Howard Jacobson for The Finkler Question (Bloomsbury)
* Andrea Levy for The Long Song (Headline Review; Headline Publishing Group)
* Tom McCarthy for C (Jonathan Cape; Random House)

In a statement, Andrew Motion, the chairman of judges, called all six novels “outstandingly good.” A group of judges selected the six books from a “long list” of 13, and will announce the winner on Oct. 12.

“We feel sure we’ve chosen books which demonstrate a rich variety of styles and themes -– while in every case providing deep individual pleasures,” Mr. Motion said.

Each of the shortlisted authors will be awarded £2,500 (about $3,800), and the winner of the Booker will receive £50,000, about $76,600.

You can find these books either through all online booksellers or locally through Joseph-Beth Bookseller at the Lexington Green Mall on Nicholasville Road or Barnes & Noble in the Hamburg Pavilion Shopping Center on Man o' War Blvd.
