A 23-year-old man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly ambushing and shooting an Atlanta police officer in the face with a shotgun.

Still, it remains unclear what motivated the shooting, which happened last month in northeast Atlanta.

Mr. Jemarcus Deshun Jordan was arrested and transported to the DeKalb County jail, according to Atlanta police.

He is charged in the Nov. 9 shooting of an off-duty police officer, Mr. Christopher L. Smith, who was working at 1752 Hardee St., police spokesman Sgt. Greg Lyon said.

Around 10 p.m. that day, the officer was working an approved extra job when he was allegedly ambushed by a suspect carrying a shotgun, police said.

“The suspect fired at the officer, striking him in the face and leg,” Sgt. Lyon said.

The officer was transported to Grady Hospital in serious condition. He was treated and released three days later.

Police have not said how they linked Mr. Jordan to the crime or what motivated the shooting.

Mr. Jordan was charged with felony aggravated assault. He was previously charged with firearm possession by a convicted felon, felony criminal damage to property, and felony possession of a weapon during a crime following a Dec. 19 arrest.
