A 62-year-old man was beaten to death inside his apartment in southeast Atlanta last month, and police on Thursday said they have arrested the man they believe killed him. Still, they don’t have a motive for the murder, though police said the victim and the suspect knew each other.
Frederick Brewton, 41, was charged Wednesday with murder and transported to the Fulton County jail, according to Atlanta police. He was also charged with aggravated assault with intent to commit murder, according to booking records.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the victim as Willie Heard. The 62-year-old apparently lived in the apartment where he was killed, officials said.
The investigation began around 10 a.m. on Aug. 12 when officers responded to the apartment complex at 380 Martin St. after someone called 911 to report that a person was injured, police spokesman Officer John Chafee said. He did not say who found the man and made the 911 call. It's also unclear if the man lived alone. Still, when officers arrived they found the man already dead, Chafee said. It's unclear how long he had been dead before he was found.
“The preliminary investigation indicates that the male sustained trauma to his head and it appears that the victim may have known the attacker,” Chafee said. Police did not release any details on how the man sustained the injury or the circumstances surrounding his murder. They also did not say why investigators believe the suspect and the victim knew each other.
Brewton remained in the Fulton County jail Thursday without bond, according to the booking records. Police did not say how they were able to link him to the crime.
