In the latest of a rash of shootings on college campuses across America last week, 19-year-old Justin Bernard Singleton was taken into custody in the early morning hours of Jan. 25 and charged with the shooting murder of 20-year-old Brandon Robinson.

The fatal shooting took place near the college dorms at South Carolina State University on Friday, Jan. 24, according to USA Today.

Brandon Robinson died Friday afternoon as a result of that shooting.

Robinson was a junior at South Carolina State University where he also played football as a defensive lineman for the Bulldogs.

Singleton was arrested in the university’s college town of Orangeburg and taken to the Orangeburg-Calhoun Regional Detention Center.

Initially, authorities said that police were searching for four men involved in the shooting. After Singleton was arrested, officials declined to comment as to whether or not an active manhunt was still ongoing for other suspects.

According to law enforcement spokesperson Thom Berry, “Our investigation is continuing."

The gunmen left campus before police could catch them, but authorities decided to lock down the campus so they could not return, said University Police Chief Mernard Clarkson said Friday. The lockdown was lifted Friday evening.

At this point, Chief Clarkson said that there is still no known motive for the shooting of Justin Bernard Singleton

In a statement released from South Carolina State University, university president Thomas J. Elzey said in part:

South Carolina State University is saddened today. We are saddened by the loss of one of our own students. Our deepest condolences go to the family of the victim.

Of course our first order of business here is to make sure our students are safe and cared for during this very difficult time. Grief counseling is being made available for our Students, faculty and staff.

As police work to apprehend the people they believe to be responsible for this horrible crime, we are pulling together as a community.
