A woman who was allegedly shot by her boyfriend, causing her to accidentally drop her child, became his hostage a day later in an hours-long SWAT stand-off Sunday in southeast Atlanta.
But in the end, police arrested the man.
The investigation began shortly after 10 p.m. when officers responded to 377 Corvair Drive after getting a call that an adult and a child had been shot, according to Atlanta police.
Officers later discovered only a woman was shot, police spokeswoman Officer Kim Jones said.
“The child was injured slightly as the female dropped the child when she was shot,” Officer Jones said. “Both were transported to area hospitals and were later released.”
Police did not release any details on the circumstances of the shooting, but the woman told officers her boyfriend Mr. Jermaine Parker was the one who shot her, Officer Jones said.
At 11:13 a.m. officers responded to another call at the home. This time they were told a woman was being held at knife point.
“When officers arrived at the location they were approached by family members who informed officers that the same female and child were being held at the same location by Mr. Jermaine Parker,” Officer Jones said.
Additional officers responded to the location along with hostage negotiators and members of the SWAT team.
Hostage negotiators were able to convince Mr. Parker to release the child who was turned over uninjured family members, Officer Jones said. But he refused to release the woman.
After several hours, SWAT officers were able to distract Mr. Parker and take him into custody.
The woman was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital to be evaluated. Mr. Parker is facing numerous charges, including kidnapping and aggravated assault.
