Fernando Pacheco, 27, appeared in court today to face animal cruelty charges after he allegedly threw a kitten, 15 feet into a wall.
According to San Diego Humane Society officials, Pacheco was visiting friends back in June when the kitten, scratched Pacheco and he reacted by throwing the kitten into the wall.
Judge David Szumowski scheduled a readiness conference for Sept. 9 and a prelim hearing for Sept. 30. Pacheco is free on his own recognizance, reported North County Times.
The 4-month old kitten named Cullen, suffered head trauma, a broken leg and had a bloody nose.
The Human Society investigated the incident after it was reported by the animal hospital. They sent their report to the district attorney's office after their investigation, which resulted in Pacheco facing charges.
Pacheco is a Marine and was off duty during the incident.
"If these allegations are true, they are a violation of our core values of 'honor, courage and commitment,' " a spokesman for the Marine Corps. told LA Times.
The veterinary bills for Cullen's care were $5000 and he has fully recovered.
