Man accused of savagely beating dog to death because he ‘doesn’t like animals’

A Lincoln, Nebraska, man has been arrested on suspicion of having repeatedly stomped on and kicked the head of a small dog belonging to his girlfriend, ultimately crushing the animal's skull. The only reason being advanced for the brutal killing of a 4-year-old Chihuahua is that the man in police custody did not like his girlfriend’s dog.

The 53-year-old girlfriend, whose name has been withheld, told police she was taking a bath in her East Lincoln home when her boyfriend Michael Darby, also 53, called in to her that something was wrong with her dog.

When the woman emerged, she found the dog, Bella, lying on the kitchen floor, bleeding from the nose, ears and mouth. Frantic, the flustered owner attempted to care for the dog. In spite of her efforts, Bella died soon afterward.

Police maintain that x-rays of the dog taken during a necropsy reveal a number of skull fractures that animal health officials insist could not have happened accidentally.

Darby was arrested two days later and has been charged with felony animal cruelty. He has not made a statement to police, and the girlfriend claims the couple had not been arguing.
