The 29-year-old transient, Danny Fis, faces charges for stealing a Honda Odyssey in Studio City, Calif., on August 17. Two days after the vehicle was taken, it was recovered, along with the body of the family's dog who had been inside of the vehicle when it disappeared.
Fis had pleaded not guilty to the animal cruelty charge as well as the charge of unlawful driving or taking of a vehicle.
After surveillance images were released of the man believed to have taken the Odyssey, Fis was arrested in the same general area from which the vehicle was taken.
The deceased dog, a 10-year-old yellow, Labrador retriever named "Maru," was sleeping in the back of the minivan when it was stolen.
Maru's guardian, Nayo Mateo, had left the air-conditioning on inside of the vehicle to keep the dog cool while he ran inside of a nearby store to pick up his wife and young daughter.
Within moments of walking away from the minivan, it was stolen.
When the Honda Odyssey was recovered, all of the windows were rolled up; a necropsy on Maru confirmed that heat exhaustion was the cause of death.
