Rudolph William Poppe was arrested last summer after witnesses observed him beating his elderly golden retriever over the head with a sledgehammer; the dog, named "Millie," was so severely wounded that she had to be euthanized.
According to the police report, Poppe had tried to put his elderly dog "out of its misery," by repeatedly hitting the dog in the head with the sledgehammer. When the authorities arrived, the dog was lying on the ground in a pool of blood with a bag covering her head.
A neighbor who saw what was happening claims that Poppe hit the dog at least 15 times.
In court, Poppe admitted that he was drunk on the day that the dog was beaten, but stated that he was cognizant of what he had done.
Sentencing is expected to take place on Dec. 3; Poppe is expected to be sentenced to a stayed prison term of a year and a day.
