Authorities are in outrage over the marriage arrangement of a 70-year-old man to a 15-year-old girl in Saudi Arabia. Many news outlets reported this story on January 8, 2013.
The 70-year-old man spoke with CNN, but refused to give his name. The man says he paid a dowry of $20,000 to the girl’s parents for her hand in marriage.
Social Workers are in disbelief that this marriage could have happened. They are wondering where the adults were when this girl needed them.
Even though there is a humongous age difference, Saudi Arabia has no age limitations on age minimums or maximums for marriage.
Most marriages are arranged, (in Saudi Arabia) but there is a growing trend perticularly in urban areas for people to pick their own future spouses.
The reason this marriage came to light is because the 70-year-old man complained to the police that his wife had left him.
Rumor is that the two had a fight, and the young girl went back home to her parents.
