A 67-year-old man was seriously injured when his SUV was struck and pushed down the tracks by a slow-moving train in Dalton Tuesday morning.

Mr. Rogelio Nieto-Martinez was transported to Hamilton Medical Center and then to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tenn., according to Dalton police. His condition was unknown Wednesday morning.

Witnesses told police that the crossing gates and flashing lights were on when the crash happened at the railroad crossing on Tyler Street, police spokesman Mr. Bruce Frazier said in a news release.

“Nieto-Martinez’s SUV apparently was entering the intersection as the gates were coming down and then stopped for several seconds before lurching forward again and being hit in the passenger side by the approaching train,” Mr. Frazier said.

The SUV was pushed down the tracks to the next railroad crossing at Long Street, he said.

Police are still investigating why the man entered the tracks despite the flashing lights.
