A 61-year-old man was charged Tuesday in the deaths of a brother and sister who were hit by a vehicle while changing a tire on I-75 in Morrow.
Mr. Kenneth C. Ebel, of Fayetteville, was charged with two counts of second-degree vehicular homicide, according to Morrow police.
The incident happened shortly after 11 a.m. Monday when the siblings stopped their vehicle in the gore area on the entrance ramp to I-75 northbound from Jonesboro Road, police spokesman Capt. James Callaway said.
Ms. Savannah Guio Hayter, 30, and her brother, Mr. Steven Mack, 23, both from Texas, had gotten out of the car to try and change a flat tire, Capt. Callaway said.
A Toyota SUV was coming down the ramp to enter the interstate when the vehicle struck the brother and sister. The driver stopped after hitting the siblings, Capt. Callaway said.
Ms. Hayter died at the scene while her brother died later at Grady Memorial Hospital, the captain said.
The Georgia Department of Transportation said traffic was backed up for up to three miles around lunchtime after a multi-vehicle wreck followed the initial incident, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
