A man was shot and left to die late Sunday night on a street in southeast Atlanta – and police said they have not yet determined who killed him or why.

On Monday, the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Mr. Kelcey Thornton, 37, of Atlanta.

Shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to Greenfield Street near Ormond Street after getting a report of a person shot, according to Atlanta police.

“When the officers arrived, they noticed that an unresponsive male was lying on the street with a small amount of blood around his mouth,” police spokesman Sgt. Greg Lyon said.

Mr. Thornton was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later, Sgt. Lyon said.

So far, police have found no witnesses to the shooting and no further details have been released regarding the circumstances of what happened.

It’s also unclear if the man was shot elsewhere.
