Man killed after being hit by his own car in 2-vehicle collision on I-285

A 34-year-old Stone Mountain man died of blunt force injuries to the head and body after a freak collision ended with him being hit by his own vehicle Saturday on I-285, officials said.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the man as Mr. Gerald Askew.

The wreck happened early Saturday on I-285 between Cascade Road and Mount Gilead in southwest Atlanta, according to Atlanta police.

Investigators said Mr. Askew was traveling north on I-285 when he struck the guardrail, re-entered the roadway and stopped in one of the lanes.

“The driver exited the vehicle,” police spokesman Sgt. Gregory Lyon said. “A second vehicle then struck the first vehicle and it appears that the first vehicle then struck and killed the driver.”

Investigators hours later were still trying to determine why Mr. Askew lost control of his vehicle and hit the guardrail. No charges have been filed in the incident and there were no reports of any other injuries.
