A 23-year-old man was found dead about an hour after several shots were fired near an apartment complex in Gwinnett County late Sunday night. Several people were in the area at the time of the shooting and police said they are trying to determine if the man was the target or an innocent bystander.
So far, no one has been arrested in the shooting and police don’t have a motive for the crime. It’s also unclear how many shots were fired and how many people were involved.
Around 11:15 p.m., officers responded to the a report of gunshots being fired near the Bradford Gwinnett Apartments at 100 Castor Drive, according to Gwinnett County police. Several people and vehicles were in the area at the time shooting, police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found several people, but did not immediately find evidence of anyone being shot, Smith said. Then nine minutes later, Norcross police reported they had a victim whose car had been shot, but the driver was unarmed, he said.
Investigators notified local hospitals to be on the lookout for gunshot victims and crime scene investigators responded to document the scene, Smith said.
Then at 12:12 a.m., an officer who was checking the area on foot located a man dead from an apparent gunshot wound, Smith said. The man was found in a wooded area behind 2092 Beaver Springs Lane near the apartment complex.
He was later identified as Kevin Pierre who lived on Beaver Springs Lane, Smith said. Detectives believe he was shot during the incident about an hour earlier, but do not know if he was the intended target or if he shot accidentally.
So far, detectives have interviewed several witnesses and persons of interest in this case, but they are still trying to determine exactly what happened.
