Young Nicholas Sheffey was asleep with his Bible when three gang members opened fire outside the 11-year-old boy’s Chamblee home.
Days later, Nicholas died from a gunshot wound to the head.
On Tuesday the last of the three gang members, 21-year-old Cody Bauer was sentenced to life plus 675 years in prison for killing the boy, according to the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office.
Prosecutors said the deadly shooting resulted from a vendetta between the Crisps gang members and the boy’s older brother.
The other two gag members, Mr. Alexander Sidloskas and Mr. Stedmund Anthony, were previously sentenced to 25 years in prison and 25 years on probation, the district attorney's spokesman Mr. Erik Burton said.
“These three young men had a vendetta against Nicholas’ older brother Devon Sheffey,” District Attorney Mr. Robert James said. “Bauer proceeded to fire multiple rounds of ammunition into the Sheffey’s residence targeting Devon but fatally wounding Nicholas.
“No amount of jail time will bring Nicholas back, but this sentence sends a resounding message that gang and criminal activity will not be tolerated in DeKalb County.”
The shooting happened on Feb. 11, 2010 and Nicholas died five days later after sustaining a bullet wound to his head as he slept with his Bible in him Admiral Drive home, Mr. Burton said.
Mr. Bauer pleaded guilty to malice murder, felony murder, multiple counts of aggravated assault and violation of Georgia’s Anti-Gang Act, Mr. Burton said.
He also pleaded to other charges arising from an armed robbery and numerous acts of “gang tagging” which were not directly connected with the murder.
