A 21-year-old man died of a gunshot wound to the head and another man was shot in the leg during a confrontation with two men Thursday night on a bike trail in northeast Atlanta.

Police believe it may have been a robbery attempt.

Around 5:40 p.m., officers responded to 255 Rogers St. after someone called to report a person had been shot, according to Atlanta police.

When they arrived they found one man with head injuries and another with a leg wound. They also found a woman who was unharmed, but upset, police spokeswoman Officer Kim Jones said.

The critical victim, identified by news reports as Mr. Xavier Arnold, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital late Thursday where he died from his injuries.

The second man, whose name has not been released, was taken to the same hospital. But his condition was unknown.

Investigators said the two men and Mr. Arnold’s girlfriend were walking on the bike trail when they were approached by the two suspects.

The two suspects got into a fight with the two male victims who were subsequently shot during the confrontation, police spokeswoman Officer Kim Jones said.

The two suspects fled the scene after the gunshots were fired.
