A 20-year-old Rome man was arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend’s 3-year-old daughter.
Mr. David Zachary Gresham was charged with murder, aggravated battery, cruelty to children and reckless conduct, Rome police announced Wednesday.
Mr. Gresham is accused of killing Gabriella “Ella” Camp, who died Thursday at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite, police spokesman Lt. Gary Clayton said.
Police have been investigating Gabriella’s death since Sept. 17, when she was taken to Floyd Medical Center unresponsive and suffering from severe head injury, police said.
Hospital officials contacted police, and later that day the girl was flown to Scottish Rite where she died two days later.
Hundreds in the community rallied to help the child’s family by selling T-shirts with her name across the front. Nearly 13,000 people joined the “Prayers for Ella” Facebook group. A funeral for Gabriella was held Monday in Rome, according to a media report.
Despite the arrest, police have still not confirmed the cause of the child's death.
The GBI Crime Lab conducted Gabriella’s autopsy on Friday and Saturday, but a manner of death is being withheld, pending toxicology, histology, medical records and the police investigation, Floyd County Coroner Barry Henderson said, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
