When I was a kid, shakes were the ultimate comfort food. If you’re already snacking on something salty i.e. popcorn, fries, even a pastrami sandwich, the sweetness of malts and shakes keeps the grubbin’ going. However, because I know the secret to my childhood shakes, going out on a limb with a restaurant made shake or malt is always a bit risky on the Will-I-Be-Satisfied-Ometer. Having taken a risk on more than one occasion, here’s what I came up with:
A Shake/Malt fit for the Silver Screen: The Studio Diner has a primo spot at San Diego’s own television and film production studios. Playing the part, the diner is decorated with movie production lights; old movie set paraphernalia, servers who are looking to catch their big break, as well as indoor and outdoor seating. Their shakes and malts are picture perfect, topped with whip cream and maraschino cherries. While you’re wondering whether the guy in the booth next to you is a big studio exec, try nibbling on their waffle fries and signature dipping sauce along with this shake of the Silver Screen.
menu because if I continue to list I’m going to get hungry again. Offering extensive menus for all three meals of the day, the restaurant does not slow down with the dessert menu. However, something to take the time and sip on is the Cool, Calm, and Chocolate Shake. Yes, that’s the name and anything that will tell you to relax ought to be downright wonderful. It is essentially a chocolate mint shake with crushed Oreos and chocolate sauce to boot. On top, whip cream and an extra whole Oreo to nibble on.
A Shake/Malt for the munchies: Mentioned previously, Mr. Frostie’s is a beach-bum classic when it comes to soft-serve desserts. With a multitude of possibilities to shake up your malt or shake, Mr. Frostie offers one of the most satisfying shakes that I have had since I was a kid…it just might even give you a stomach ache too if you’re not too careful!
