Mallory Nelson earns female athlete of the week

Each week during the high school sports season the Eastern Maine High School Sports Examiner and the Eastern Maine Sports Blog will announce a female and male athlete of the week. You can send your nominations to Marc @ easternmainesportsblog@yahoo.com. When you send your nominations include the athlete, name of the school, stats for the week of the nomination. All stats for the week may not be included if they were not sent in with the nomination.

Female

Mallory Nelson- Mt. Ararat- Basketball- Recorded 22 points (12-12 FT) and five rebounds in 51-37 quarterfinal victory over Oxford Hills. Recorded 24 points (12-12 FT), eight rebounds in 56-44 semifinal loss to Bangor.

Runner up

Taylor Blood- Mattanawcook- Basketball- Totaled 26 points (10 for 11 from foul line), 20 rebounds, seven assists, four steals and three blocks. Mattanawcook defeated Houlton 35-28 in the quarterfinals and loss 46-45 to Calais in the semifinals.

Other nominations

Sydney Churchill- Fort Fairfield- Basketball- Scored 27 points in 53-49 quarterfinal loss to Machias.

Kate Whitney- Machias- Basketball- Recorded 20 points, five rebounds and five steals in 53-49 quarterfinal victory over Fort Fairfield.

Cory Fellows- PCHS- Basketball- Recorded 10 points and 16 rebounds in 45-40 quarterfinal loss to Orono.

Alex Speed- PCHS- Basketball- Scored 10 of her 16 points in the second half, recorded seven steals and three steals in 45-40 quarterfinal loss to Orono.

Elea Kass- Orono - Basketball- Scored five of her 17 points in the second half in 45-40 quarterfinal victory over PCHS.

Jillian Woodward- Orono- Basketball- Recorded 16 points and 17 rebounds in 45-40 quarterfinal victory over PCHS. Recorded 15 points and 15 rebounds in 63-54 semifinal loss to Calais.

Michaela White- Dexter- Basketball- Recorded 13 points and five steals in 38-36 quarterfinal victory over Sumner.

Lauren Crane- Dexter- Basketball- Recorded 11 points, 10 rebounds and four steals in 38-36 quarterfinal victory over Sumner.

Jordan Merchant- Sumner- Basketball- Scored 12 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in 38-36 quarterfinal loss to Dexter.

Harley Ponte-Dexter- Cheering- Helped lead her team to its first cheering State Championship all with an intense sprain in her ankle. Great tumbling, flying skills, and jumps. She is a solid performer and talented dancer! Her performance and leadership gave the school its first state championship in cheering ever.

Megan Ireland- Presque Isle- Basketball- Scored 24 points on 9-12 shooting including 4-5 from three point range in 62-48 semifinal victory over MDI. Ireland finished regional tournament with eight 3-pointers.

Jordan Knowlton- Scored 29 points and grabbed seven rebounds in 45-40 semifinal loss to Nokomis.

Anna Mackenzie- Nokomis- Basketball- Scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in 45-40 semifinal victory over Camden Hills. Recorded 14 points, 13 rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block in 66-51 regional final loss to Presque Isle.

Kelli Kennedy- Narraguagus- Basketball- Scored 24 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in 56-54 quarterfinal loss to Calais.

Morgan Thompson- Schenck- Basketball- Recorded 22 points, seven rebounds and five steals in 54-52 semifinal victory over Hodgdon.

Mackenzie Worcester- Washburn- Basketball- Scored 32 points in 87-42 semifinal victory over Machias.

Carsyn Koch- Washburn- Basketball- Scored 18 points in 87-42 victory over Machias.

Madison McVicar- Calais- Basketball- Recorded 13 points and five assists in 56-55 victory over Mattanawcook. Recorded 15 points, four assists and two steals in 63-54 regional final victory over Orono.
