Mallory Hagan is Miss New York no more.
The 23-year-old Brooklyn resident was crowned Miss America 2013 on Saturday night in Las Vegas.
Hagan was a dark horse in the pageant judging. Unlike several who finished as semifinalists, Hagan had won no major Miss America awards earlier in the week.
She is a graduate of Opelika High School who has attended the Fashion Institute of Technology.
Her ambition is to earn a degree in cosmetics and fragrance marketing.
At the time of her crowning as Miss New York last year, she was the reigning Miss New York City.
During the talent portion of the pageant, she tapped danced to James Brown's "Get up off of that Thang."
As Miss America, Hagan "will be focusing her efforts on Child Sexual Abuse Awareness and Prevention, an issue that hits close to home," according to New York pageant officials. "Hagan has chosen to honor the women in her family who have been victims of sexual abuse by sharing their personal stories and encouraging others to take a stand. Current partnerships include organizations such as Stop It Now!, Darkness to Light and Safe Horizon. Hagan has also joined the Child Abuse Prevention Program team where she will play an integral role in program planning for the upcoming school year, as well as the organizations’ social media presence and fundraising efforts."
