Mall carjacking leads to husband's death

Dustin Friedland was out shopping with his wife Jamie on Sunday night when he was fatally shot by one of two carjackers that accosted him outside his 2012 Range Rover. The husband of two years is believed to have been seeking to protect his wife, age 27, who was already in their car when the two assailants approached Dustin, according to the NY Post.

Friedland, 30, refused to hand over his car keys when they were demanded and tussled with the armed man after the suspect put a gun to the shoppers head. Several bullets were fired as a result, with one hitting the victim in the head.

Jamie Friedland was forced out of the vehicle following the shooting by the gunman, who then drove off in the couple's vehicle as the second man trailed him in a Subaru SUV.

The young widow and her dead husband had been shopping for Christmas gifts in a high-end Milburn, NJ, mall and had just headed back to their vehicle with all their bags when the altercation occurred.

Dustin and Jamie had purchased a $625,000 Hoboken home in October, and the two were looking forward to starting a family according to relatives. Both were attorneys by trade, with Dustin working for his father's company Epic Mechanical, Inc., handling construction-related legal matters, and his wife Jamie Schare Friedland working for the Manhattan firm Adam Leitman Bailey, where she specialized in landlord-tenant law.

Fox News reported that Dustin was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital around midnight. And police are urging other shoppers to step up their guard this holiday season by offering them the following shopping safety tips.

Shopping Safety Tips

  • Park in well-lit areas
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Have your keys ready
  • Do not shop alone at night, and
  • Look inside your car before you enter it

Dustin and Jamie Friedland followed these safety tips, but they encountered criminals anyway. And that's still a danger to us all while out shopping. But following these safety tips might prevent someone else from victimization this Christmas.

This is a sad and tragic end to a promising young couple this holiday season, and Jamie's uncle couldn't help but express his anger at the killers who stole Dustin Friedland's life from him on Sunday night.

I want them dead. What did they gain? It's just evil."
