Walt Disney Pictures' fairy-tale flick "Maleficent" easily debuted at No. 1 at the U.S. and Canadian box office for the weekend ending June 1, 2014. According to a Box Office Mojo report published on June 1, "Maleficent" (a "Sleeping Beauty" origin story starring Angelina Jolie as Maleficent) had $70 million in ticket sales for the weekend ending June 1, 2014.

Universal Pictures' "A Million Ways to Die in the West" (a raunchy comedy starring Seth MacFarlane and Charlize Theron) debuted at No. 3, with $17 million in ticket sales.

According to Box Office Mojo, here are the Top 5 movies in the U.S. and Canada for the weekend ending June 1, 2014:

1. "Maleficent" — $70 million

2. "X-Men: Days of Future Past" — $32.6 million

3. "A Million Ways to Die in the West" — $17 million

4. "Godzilla" — $12.3 million

5. "Blended" — $8.4 million

And here are the opening-weekend box-office numbers for the movies that opened in limited release on May 30, 2014:

  • "Night Moves" — $24,100 from two theaters
  • "Korengal" — $15,100 from one theater
  • "Elena" — $12,100 from one theater
  • "Lucky Them" — $4,500 from one theater (Also premiered on VOD on May 30, 2014)
