Disney Interactive finally confirmed Friday the addition of Merida from Pixar’s “Brave” and Maleficent from “Sleeping Beauty and a new movie with her name to “Disney Infinity 2.0 Edition.” The pair have been part of a teaser campaign since they were first spotted in the “Marvel Super Heroes” announcement trailer weeks ago. Now, they get their own trailer.
In a press release sent out by Disney Interactive, Merida is described as:
"With her untamed fiery red locks, this headstrong Disney-Pixar Princess will definitely leave her mark in ‘Disney Infinity.’ Between her sharp sword and bow combo attacks with ricocheting arrows, she can upgrade her aim with elemental freeze arrows, freezing enemies in front of her then following up with rapid shots showing off her impressive athletic skills as an archer and sword fighter.”
Meanwhile Maleficent is:
“The wicked title character from the upcoming Walt Disney Studios film employs numerous magical powers and can attack using her magic in melee and ranged combat. To defeat enemies, Maleficent has the ability to utilise projectile and area of effect attacks that affect multiple targets within a specified area, brambles that she summons from the ground and ravens that she can call on to attack targets.”
Both characters will be release sometime this fall and will be playable in the Toy Box 2.0 mode in “Disney Infinity 2.0 Edition.” Not mentioned is the importance of adding more female characters to the game.
The original “Disney Infinity” was sorely lacking female characters when it first released and none were included in the Starter Pack. That left the two female characters from “The Incredibles” and one female character from “Cars” as the only options for girls that wanted to play and explore the game until subsequent waves of figures was released such as the “Frozen.”
This caused many a lament with young gamer parents (including this father). Disney Interactive appears to at least be attempting to remedy that issue with “Disney Infinity 2.0 Edition” by including Black Widow in the Starter Pack and including strong, diverse and interesting female characters in the first wave of characters.
