Malaysian stray dog fights for life, animal welfare laws needed (VIDEO)

The Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better & Malaysian Cats Care Project (MDDB & MCCP) has rescued a dog, “Kuda,” from the streets of Malaysia. Kuda was attacked by a pack of strays and suffers from a huge wound as a result. When the rescue group found him, it was late at night so they housed him temporarily until they could take him to the vet the next morning. However, he escaped from the second floor, suffering further injury.

The next day he was found and taken to the veterinarian for treatment and he has been released to a rescuer’s home while he heals. Although it was recommended that they euthanize him, given that Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better & Malaysian Cats Care Project are no-kill organizations, they said no.

“He has consumed all food serve to him and response well to his rescuers. Is there a reason why we have to put him down? We couldn't find any...No-way!!!”

Another vet has just examined Kuda and he recommends that he be sent down to Kuala Lumpur to undergo another surgery. The surgery will cost approximately $2,000 USD. In the meantime, the rescue group feels that it would be better for Kuda to recuperate in a home environment rather than being cooped up in a kennel at the veterinarian's office with little space to move. They say that he seemed more relaxed and comfortable upon reaching the home of the rescuer.

Unfortunately, Kuda is not the only sad case in Malaysia with regard to animals. Animal welfare is not of concern to most Malaysians and stray animals are in danger most of the time. Independent rescue groups are constantly striving to promote “Catch, Neuter, Release/Rehome, Manage” programs, but their proposals always fall on deaf ears. There are often cases of animal abuse found in the local papers, such as the most recent case in which the local council went into a house and killed a family dog in front of the owner and his children just because the dog did not have a license. Another example is nine stray dogs that were shot, some beheaded, and then dumped at a rubbish site. When questioned, the authorities told reporters that they will sometimes decapitate the animals to test for rabies. Videos of other recent animal abuse cases in Malaysia can be seen here and at this link.

Animal welfare advocates in Malaysia urge people around the world to come forward to pressure the Malaysian government to encourage more stringent rules when handling animals. They would like to work along with the authorities to reduce the population of strays in the most humane way possible through "Catch, Neuter, Release/Rehome, Manage". If you would like to express your outrage at the way animals are treated in Malaysia and urge authorities to make more stringent laws, you can sign the petition at this link.
