Maksim Chmerkovskiy on why he left 'DWTS' and his new love of the show

Being away from "Dancing with the Stars" for a year has done a lot of good for Maksim Chmerkovskiy. In an interview with OK! Magazine, posted on Friday, April 4, the pro dancer explained why he left the show for a bit and what has changed to make him appreciate the opportunity again.

Maks, who is currently partnered with Olympic figure skater Meryl Davis, explained that he took the show way too seriously and was beating himself up when things, and especially his partners, didn't turn out the way he wanted them to.

"It took me a year to understand not every season is a winning season...We’re only as good as our celebrity partner, and that’s very hard for me to swallow...There were partners I literally dragged as far as I could and it was not reciprocated and it was definitely not appreciated at the end. That took a lot out of me. I lost all sense of fun and this was just a grueling job that was just a contractual obligation," he said.

He now understands that he should just let things go and have fun.

"I came into this season with absolutely no competitiveness in mind. I’m not trying to win anything. I’m just having fun," he added.

Unfortunately for Maks, he may lose his partner Meryl because of the upcoming "Dancing with the Stars" partner switch up, in which the viewers will get the chance to switch up partners. Meryl has been such a great partner for him that he joked that he will sabotage the show somehow if he is forced to lose her, even if only temporarily.
