Continuing a tradition started decades ago, MAKO Boats and Bass Pro Shops are offering Fishing Funaments in South Florida this month. These family events bring together MAKO boat owners and Bass Pro Shops rewards customers, regardless of boat make, for an enjoyable weekend on the water.
Set for the Florida Keys, Sept. 19 – 22 at Islamorada’s World Wide Sportsman and Oct. 10 – 13 in Fort Myers, these relaxed events are conservation-oriented and designed for owners of MAKO boats, Bass Pro Shops saltwater enthusiasts, their families and friends to come together and fish for a wide variety of game fish – backcountry, near shore and offshore.
Hosting the Fishing Funaments will be TV fishing personality and longtime MAKO owner, George Poveromo.
At the end of each day, participants can share notes and stories at festive dockside cookouts. There will be special plaques to recognize outstanding catches, and framed Carey Chen art prints to honor divisional champions, including top junior anglers. Participants are encouraged to bring their kids.
A team of pro anglers will be on hand to answer specific fishing questions, including where to go and the best rigs and tactics to catch the area’s most sought-after game fish. Those who attend can learn the shortcuts to catching more and larger fish. Plus, some of the latest fishing gear will be on display by event sponsors.
Activities are planned for all ages. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to demo a variety of models in the MAKO lineup. The $50 per boat entry fee includes a Bass Pro Shops captain’s bag filled with goodies, Fishing Funament T-shirts for everyone aboard, daily dockside parties and cookouts, and free dockage and trailer storage (available on a first come, first served basis).
Selected hotels and resorts are offering special Fishing Funament rates (see www.funaments.com).
The Islamorada event will kick-off at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 19 inside World Wide Sportsman with a meeting to discuss the event, fishing conditions and to distribute captain’s bags. Fishing hours on Friday and Saturday are from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the dockside cookouts slated from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The awards will be presented dockside on Saturday, beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday is a leisure day – either fishing or trailering for home.
