Making Valentine's Day bearable without a date

Valentine's Day is either filled with romance or filled with dread.  Although you may be single, or maybe your significant other is not especially romantic or is not around for that date, there is still reason to celebrate and actually have fun.  Here are a few suggestions on how to make the most of this holiday overtaken by marketers:

  • Attitude is everything.  Repeat to yourself:  today is my own personal holiday from stress and worry.
  • Feel like you might need an attitude adjustment?  Make a list of everything negative you can think about...then rewrite each item with a truthful, positive twist.  For example, "I never get a date on Valentine's!" can be replaced with "I don't have a date this Valentine's Day, but this is a great opportunity to have some me-time.  I can do whatever I want because I don't have to worry about pleasing a man!"
  • Spend a certain amount of time (30 minutes or an hour) doing something you've been meaning to get done, like cleaning out your closet, and then "take off" for the rest of the night.
  • Run a LUXURIOUS bubble bath.  Listen to relaxing music (Myspace has great free music to choose from), drink a glass of wine, shave your legs, do a mask...this is time for you.
  • Read a book.
  • Cook an exotic dinner for yourself.
  • Get together with all your single friends.  Have a game night, go out for drinks or watch a movie together.
  • Volunteer.
  • Bring some work home you've been meaning to catch up on.
  • Be creative.  Play an instrument.  Paint.  Write in a journal.
  • Use this time to plan a vacation.  Nothing is quite as exciting as anticipation.  Look at places online, look at your budget, and see how much you can save each month in order to really make it happen.  See if any friends want to go after you organize it.
  • Work out.  Do yoga.
  • Just RELAX!!!  :-)

Good job, Nicole. Any tips on how I can advertise through Examiner? I am Jackson Single Men's new Examiner, and this is a far stretch from family and parenting, the category in which I was previously writing. Hit me up if you don't mind. Trying to figure this whole thing out.
