The on-again off-again couple du jour, Katy Perry and reformed bad boy, John Mayer, have not only decided to give their love story another go. They’ve made a song out of it, recorded it and put it out there, for all of us to feast on. And dissect.
The song, penned by the couple themselves, is titled “Who You Love” and it’ll appear on Mayer’s new album, Paradise Valley, set to drop August 20th. The lyrics strongly hint at the lovebirds’ heavy duty attraction to one another, as well as the possible reason of their relationship struggles in the past – and subsequent breakups: Mayer’s unwillingness to be tied down.
Here is a snippet of the real love-inspired coo-fest:
Mayer: "My girl, she ain't the one that I saw coming / sometimes I don't know which way to go / and I tried to run before but I'm not running anymore / 'cause I fought against it hard enough to know / that you love who you love who you love / you can't make yourself stop dreaming of who you're dreaming of / if it's who you love, then it's who you love."
Perry: "My boy, he ain't the one that I saw coming / and some have said his heart's too hard to hold / and it takes a little time / but you should see him when he shines / 'cause you never want to let that feeling go / when you love who you love who you love."
The can’t miss moment in the recording is Perry’s not-so-subtle giggle at the end of the tune.
“That’s just a love giggle,” Perry, 28, explains to SIRIUSXM’s Morning Mash Up. “It's like the ones that Mariah Carey had in 1990," she jokes. "I was going for that, I think I was just so happy ... You’re catching the real moment there."
In a revealing interview for June’s issue of Vogue, Perry was candid about her ongoing feelings for Mayer, despite his playboy ways, noting that she was “still madly in love” with him and that he had a “beautiful mind” but a “tortured soul.”
Meyer later repaid his lady love, with a special dedication of a song to Perry at his concert in July. He thanked Perry for taking the time to “get to know me and love me,” alluding to a time when he was recovering from vocal cord surgery, during which, apparently, Perry provided him with comfort.
Katy Perry’s new album, Prism, is set to be released on October 22nd. It remains to be seen whether more tracks inspired by her relationship with Mayer, who also had high-profile relationships with Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson and a rumored fling with Taylor Swift, are to surface.
