Making peace with food or the politics of fat

Why are people afraid of fat? What do we hate obese people? What makes us think we need to fix them? For instance one poll taken asking college students what could be the worst thing to ever happen to you and the top answer was “to be fat.” Due to modern standards of beauty and medical propaganda in the form of advertising, priorities in life have changed.

Fatness is not a disease

Being fat is not even a body dysfunction. Fat is a protective mechanism that evolved to survive fluctuations in food supply. Judging someone’s weight is like judging a camel by it’s hump and the amount of water in it. It may be just what we need to survive.

We weigh what we eat

Carbs are no more to blame than fat. In the pursuit of being thin, many of us have sacrificed our health. Americans value body fitness as a sign of social prestige. If you are skinny people like you, in a culture that demonizes obesity, with the emphasis being on thinness not on being healthy. Just try discussing someone’s weight and you are likely to either make them mad or hurt their feelings which begets a terrible cycle of the “ups” and “downs” of weight loss poor dieting.

Are there any solutions

Truthfully, the only thing that can be done it to stop making obesity the scapegoat for all of our ills. The medical community uses it as the one answer for everything wrong in the body. There’s way too much melodrama surrounding it. Doctors and health officials need to stop making weight a barometer of health. People need to stop judging other people by their size. There are metabolic changes in charge of changing what is going on in your body not to mention your state of mind. The reason why diabetes and cancers are on the rise is because metabolisms are out of whack.

Overweight people are not something for other people “to fix”

If you personally want to work on your weight, then that is your beef. Imagine if the First Lady Michelle Obama went in to everyone’s homes and in our schools and said, ”being crazy is epidemic in our children and it is their parents fault for the way they live.” People have a right to be upset. There are some health issues that are controlled by weight loss, diabetes is one of them. Dieting and exercise equipment is a billions-of-dollars-a-year business and life is better in the United States than it has been is years before. Technology tells us too much information and certain people use that information to their advantage or against you.

Where’s your focus on the obesity epidemic. Why do they care. An obesity epidemic is worth millions

Government officials care because it’s a powerful reason to increase money allocations to certain areas and programs. Scientists inflate their stature which increases their ability to get research grants. Weight loss companies and doctors get their services covered by Medicare and health insurance. Drug companies increase their stock and inflate the prices of drugs that are high in demand. You have been trained to fear fat just ask the children in hospitals with eating disorders. Surely everyone could be more active believe it or not.
