Making history: Meredith Vieira will host NBC Olympic coverage

According to Fox Sports on Feb. 14, Meredith Vieira will be hosting the NBC primetime coverage of the Olympics Friday night, making her the first woman to ever solo at that spot for a US television network. Bob Costas is experiencing continued problems with an eye infection. Costas has anchored the NBC coverage of the Winter and Summer games since 1988.

Vieira provided commentary for the opening ceremonies at Sochi, and she has done live segments in the local area throughout the week. This assignment is a ground-breaking one for the 60-year-old former co-host of The Today Show. She follows her previous partner on the show, Matt Lauer, who NBC utilized to fill the slot for the Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday broadcasts.

The LA Times quotes Meredith Vieira as describing it an honor to fill in for Bob Costas. She will be returning to regular network television with a talk show on NBC this fall. For now, she is quite busy doing her part to break that glass ceiling!
