Making government work for job seekers

Is the government inhibiting job growth?

Is the government providing avenues for the private sector to create jobs? Has the government done everything in its power to foster an environment for job growth? Opinions, like stock tips, vary.

In one corner of the financial world are health care and financial professionals. The flat broke, bailed out financial institutions are “back in the black.” Huge bonuses and fifty percent increases were passed out like candy on Christmas. To them, surely, government is Santa Claus!

The insurance folks were also given “oil executive level” salaries and all the benefits. Surely, for these two industries, government, or something, must be working. But not for everyone!

DOCA (Department of Cultural Affairs) of Chicago has experienced two layoffs, totaling twenty nine employees. “People do not realize the number of people that are employed by state and federal government,” said one unemployed Chicagoan. “When we talk about downsizing government, we are talking about real people, and real jobs.”

“Our government must be more efficient,” said another Chicagoan. “While I do believe in free enterprise, I don’t believe that our government should be in the habit of cleaning up messes. Corporate welfare should be as frowned upon as family welfare.”

When asked whether or not government was working for the unemployed, one Chicagoan stated that he wasn’t sure about the government’s role in job creation. “We yell at big government, but we expect them to be big enough to create jobs, to clean up oil spills, and to make the economy run. Free market means just that! Businesses should be creating jobs; not the government.”

Everyone should seek to take advantage of any programs offered by the government. Job training programs, college loans, and career centers should all be considered when looking for that next job.
