Sitting at Mimi’s Cafe the other day, the waitress asked my five-year-old daughter if she wanted apples or applesauce for a side. After the waitress left the table, my daughter said, “hey, apples and applesauce sound alike.”
“That’s because applesauce comes from apples,” I answered. To further illustrate this to her, I offered to make applesauce with her.
This makes a fun indoor (a.k.a. air-conditioned) summer activity. My daughter helped fill the measuring cup with chopped apples, measure the water, cinnamon and sugar, and blend it all up!
Enjoy it in homemade oatmeal, as a dinner side with pork chops, or just by itself! What are your kids’ favorite ways to eat applesauce?
Applesauce
1 3 lb. bag of apples, peeled, cored and chopped
3/4 c. of water
1/2 to 1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 to 1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. lemon juice
Combine apples, water and cinnamon (to taste) in saucepan. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer 10 - 15 minutes or until tender. Pour into a blender and blend for about 1 minute or until desired consistency. Pour back into saucepan, add sugar (to taste) and lemon juice and cook on low an additional five minutes.
