Makeup lovers know that the right makeup when worn correctly can take years of your face and give you a more youthful appearance as well as diminish and even hide unsightly blemishes, wrinkles and spots on your face. But that's only if you use your makeup correctly. When applied incorrectly, makeup can age you and draw more attention to what you want to hide. You don't need to have an expert makeup team applying your makeup to ensure you're doing it correctly. With the right tips and tools, you can create a more youthful appearance with the simple application of a few products.
Before you even begin to apply any makeup to your skin, make sure that it's in tip top shape. Prep it first by exfoliating your skin, then moisturizing it and lastly, priming it for application. Without these steps, your makeup will only enhance any thin lines, wrinkles, dryness and large pores instead of hiding them.

Choosing the right foundation used to be problematic since you basically had to choose from light, medium and dark with nothing in between. Not anymore! Not only do you have great tools to help you find the right foundation like Bloomingdale's Foundation Finder Tool but many makeup companies now have foundations that range from the lightest ivory to the darkest mahogany. Stay away from powders if you have fine lines since it will just settle in give you a cakey appearance. Instead go for a foundation that will help keep your skin moisturized. When in doubt go with a tinted moisturizer.

This next one is super hard for many women but it's time to ditch the super dark matte lipsticks and lip colors. Granted they are gorgeous to look at but that's about it. Dark matte colors are severe and have no softness to them accentuating every single line and wrinkle around your lip. If you can not absolutely give up your dark lip colors then try a lip pencil/liner or stain instead and make sure that blend a balm over it to give your lips the softness they need. If you must go with a dark lipstick look for one with a moisturizing formula and make sure you use a lip pencil to prevent feathering.

No matter how much you like neutral brown shades, if they look ashy on you they're doing the opposite of what you want it to do. Ashy shades tend to make you look older as well as dated by leaving behind an almost dirty filmy layer that looks like...well, ashes. Instead look for tones that are warm with hints of reds in them like cocoa and mahogany.

Who doesn't love blush? It's perfect to give you that sun kissed flushed look on the apples of your cheeks but when done incorrectly all you’ll be left with are ugly streak marks and lines going up the sides of your face which can make you look kind of drag queenish. Instead choose a cream blush that is easily blendable with your fingers or a makeup wedge.

Makeup wedge- Beauty Blender Sponge ($19.95, Beauty Blender)
Cheek Stain- Tarte Cosmetics Cheek Stain ($30, tarte)
Cream Blush- Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Cream Blush ($24, Macy's)
With these tips you can now create a more natural and youthful look and make your makeup work for you instead of against you.
