Maker Faire hold preview for media and students

On Thursday Maker Faire held a media preview of this weekend's event in San Mateo. Organizers describe Maker Faire as “a two-day family-family festival of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker Movement. “ Maker Faire started in the Bay Area in 2006. 22,000 people attended the first Maker Faire and 120,000 are expected to attend this year's event. In addition to the Bay Area event there will be another flagship Maker Faire this year in New York City. five featured Faires (Kansas City, Detroit, Rome, Newcastle and Tokyo) and 85 Mini-Maker Faires worldwide.

The press event showcased a sampling of companies, organizations and individuals with exhibits at the event. They ranged from established companies like Ford, Lego and Radio Shack to the Davis,Ca. based start-up Barobo which is starting a Kickstarter campaign this weekend to launch production of its new Linkbot educational robot.There were also companies like ShopBot and 3-D printer manufacturer Deezmaker who make tools for makers.

In addition to the media briefing, there was also an Education Day event on Thursday. About 2,000 students from around the Bay Area got to try DIY activities and see a preview of some of the exhibits.

Maker Faire will take place at the San Mateo Expo Center from 10:00 a.m.- 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. For more information go to:
