Make your room look bigger with mirrors

Sunburst wall mirror from Target

Although most of us New Yorkers wish our apartments could literally grow in size, we'll have to settle for the alternative: the mirror illusion.

Mirrors, which obviously reflect images and light, can brighten up the dullest room. Place the mirror opposite a window (if you can find one in your apartment), and you can reflect natural light into your gloomy apartment ... and maybe even reflect some beautiful outdoor scenery like a tree or historic building.

Place lots of tiny mirrors strategically in a spot on your wall to "enlarge" your living space and add a touch of classy home decor. Mix round mirrors, ovals, diamonds, squares, and more for an interesting pattern. Mix black-and-white photos into the mirror pattern for an extra vintage feel. As with any design, just don't go overboard or it will look tacky.
