Make your own: Recipes to save you money

There are many recipes out there that can help you save money if you decide to make your own instead of going for the convenience of prepackaged items. In the attached video, you can learn how to easily make your own Gatorade! Who knew it was as simple as that? Why not give it a try?

Here are a few recipes for making your own normally store bought items that will not only save you money, but it will be a fresher choice for you too since you will be making it fresh.

Brown Sugar

Have you ever run out of brown sugar and needed a little bit for a recipe? It's extremely easy to make your own!

Dark Brown Sugar

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup molasses

Mix together with your hands. It works better than trying to stir it to mix. That's it!

Light Brown Sugar

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 TBSP molasses

Mix together with your hands.

Taco Seasoning Mix

Instead of buying the packages of Taco Seasoning Mix, make your own. This recipe makes enough for 12 pounds of Taco meat! Mix 2 TBSP of the Taco Seasoning Mix with 1 pound of ground meat.

  • 1/4 cup red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 cup ground cumin
  • 1/4 cup oregano
  • 1/4 cup garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup onion powder
  • 2 TBSP cayenne pepper
  • 3 TBSP salt

Mix all ingredients together. Store in an airtight container until ready to use.

Peanut Butter

If you've never had homemade peanut butter you have no idea what you're missing! Fresh peanut butter is delicious!

  • 16 oz of dry roasted peanuts
  • 1-2 tsp salt
  • 1-2 TBSP honey, optional

Place peanuts in a food processor and blend for 2 minutes at a time, scraping the sides and blending for an additional 2 minutes. Continue this until the peanuts have been blended for 8-10 minutes. Add salt for taste. You can also drizzle a little honey in for taste as well, but that is not necessary. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The oil may separate from the peanuts while being stored; this is normal, just stir well before using.

Steak Sauce

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/3 cup chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 TBSP soy sauce
  • 2 TBSP dark brown sugar, packed
  • 1 TBSP prepared mustard

Mix all ingredients together in a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook for 30 minutes. Allow to cool. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
